We put the HeyBike Alpha through a series of performance tests to evaluate its real-world capabilities.
Throttle-Only Acceleration Test


Our throttle-only acceleration test revealed some interesting characteristics of the Alpha’s power delivery. Unlike many ebikes that allow full throttle from a standstill, the Heybike Alpha’s throttle is disabled when not moving. This design choice by Heybike aims to reduce stress on the drivetrain. Once moving, the throttle provides a 200W capped output, but typically maintains around 50 watts. This means the throttle is not designed for quick “blast-off” acceleration or for significant assistance without pedaling, making it less effective for rapidly accelerating from a stop or zipping across intersections.
Pedal Assist Level Exploration
The HeyBike Alpha truly shines when utilizing its pedal assist system, which features a responsive torque sensor. This sensor measures your pedaling power and provides assistance proportionally, resulting in a very natural and intuitive riding experience.
- Pedal Assist Level 1 (PAS 1): At this lowest level, the Alpha provides a gentle boost, often delivering between 100-200 watts of assistance, with peaks up to 300 watts during initial acceleration. We found cruising speeds around 11-14 mph with light pedaling effort.
- Pedal Assist Level 2 (PAS 2): Stepping up to PAS 2, the wattage immediately jumps, providing a sustained 150-200 watts, and can instantly increase to 350-400 watts with more pedaling effort. The torque sensor’s tuning makes the assistance feel very natural, rewarding increased rider input.
- Pedal Assist Level 3 (PAS 3): In PAS 3, the Alpha sustains around 200-250 watts, allowing for comfortable cruising speeds of 13-15 mph. This level provides a noticeable boost while still requiring moderate rider effort.
- Pedal Assist Level 4 (PAS 4): This level delivers sustained power in the range of 260-300 watts. We easily achieved speeds of 16-17 mph with very little effort, indicating the motor’s strong capability at this assist level.
- Pedal Assist Level 5 (PAS 5): At the highest pedal assist level, the Alpha provides an instant boost of 600 watts, sustaining between 500-600 watts. With moderate pedaling effort, we reached speeds of 20-27 mph. With a little more push, hitting the top speed is doable for short sprints. The Alpha is capped by its Class 3 classification, which limits pedal-assisted speed to 28 mph.
Pedal Assisted Acceleration Test


When accelerating from a dead stop using Pedal Assist Level 5 and starting in gear one, the HeyBike Alpha demonstrated impressive responsiveness. We observed an instant peak of 930 watts, allowing for rapid acceleration through the gears. The bike quickly reached speeds in the mid-20s (22-27 mph) with moderate pedaling effort. It’s important to note that, due to the lack of a shift sensor, we consciously eased off pedaling briefly during shifts to prevent putting excessive strain on the drivetrain. Notably, our display spedometer read out was faster than the GPS at higher speeds. This can be calibrated by adjusting the wheel size within the display.
Hill Climb Tests
We conducted two distinct hill climb tests to assess the HeyBike Alpha’s performance on inclines.

Throttle-Only Hill Climb
As anticipated from our acceleration tests, the Heybike Alpha struggled significantly on the hill climb when relying solely on the throttle. The limited throttle output, capped at around 6-7 amps (or roughly 50 watts), meant that speeds quickly dropped, eventually reaching as low as 3 mph before the bike could no longer maintain momentum. This confirms that the Alpha’s throttle is not intended for significant hill-climbing assistance without rider input.
Pedal Assisted Hill Climb
The HeyBike Alpha truly excelled in the pedal-assisted hill climb, showcasing the power and efficiency of its mid-drive motor and torque sensor.
- Pedal Assist Level 1 (PAS 1): Even at the lowest assist level, the Alpha provided enough power to comfortably ascend the hill at 7-8 mph with light pedaling. The assistance felt natural, making it feel like a regular cycling experience with an added boost.
- Pedal Assist Level 2 (PAS 2): The wattage immediately jumped, and the bike felt like “somebody’s holding the back of my seat and pushing me up the hill.” This level provided a strong, consistent boost while still feeling like a normal cycling experience.
- Pedal Assist Level 3 (PAS 3): Sustaining 350-400 watts, the Alpha maintained a consistent 7-8 mph on the hill with an easy cadence, requiring minimal effort from the rider.
- Pedal Assist Level 4 (PAS 4): The bike became noticeably more responsive at this level. With a slightly faster pedaling cadence, the Alpha “shoots you up” the hill, demonstrating its significant power output, with observed peaks up to 800 watts.
- Pedal Assist Level 5 (PAS 5): At the highest assist level, the Alpha made climbing the hill nearly effortless, maintaining 9-10 mph. This level is ideal for riders who want maximum assistance on steep inclines or prefer to exert very little effort.
Overall, the HeyBike Alpha’s mid-drive motor proved exceptionally capable on hills when paired with pedaling, providing a powerful and natural-feeling assist that made even challenging climbs manageable.
