I spent some time testing the LIVALL PikaBoost 2 Lite Edition to see if this $329 friction drive kit is a practical way to get some extra help on your ride. Out of the box, the system is impressively simple, integrating both the 250W/500W peak motor and a 158Wh battery into a single package. A pleasant surprise is that the 7.2Ah battery is removable, meaning we can swap in additional packs if we need more range. Charging is handled conveniently via USB-C ports located on both the main housing and the battery itself. The entire unit carries an IPX5 water resistance rating and features a built-in rear light with a fast-flashing option, though we noticed the light can be tough to see in direct daylight.
Getting it onto the bike is highly manageable for most riders. It mounts directly to the seat post and uses security bolts in an attempt to deter theft. Once physically mounted, calibration is done through their smartphone app, which automatically adjusts the angle of the device so that the roller wheel maintains proper contact with the rear tire. The app actually works quite well, and the motor paired easily.
The Riding Experience
If you are accustomed to the refined torque or cadence sensors found on modern ebikes, you will need to adjust your expectations. The power delivery here is essentially strictly on or off. The motor waits until you reach roughly six or seven miles per hour before it kicks in, ensuring the system knows you are actually moving and not attempting to stop.
Once engaged, it behaves surprisingly like a throttle on flat ground. If we stop pedaling while cruising or going down a slight incline, the motor will continue to propel us forward. LIVALL claims a top speed of 15 mph for this Lite edition, but during our flat straightaway tests, the motor continued to provide assistance up to 17 or 18 mph. Potential buyers should note that the motor noise is definitely noticeable, and it is louder than typical modern hub motors that are advertised as quiet.
We can choose between a standard and a powerful assist level in the app, though we honestly did not notice a dramatic difference between the two. Engaging the brakes immediately cuts the motor power, proving to be a reliable safety feature.
Hill Climbing Limitations
Where the friction drive meets its match is on inclines. Because the system cuts power when resistance increases or your speed drops below that six-mile-per-hour threshold, it essentially disengages right when you need it most on a climb. We found you can maintain power on very moderate hills if you keep your speed up around eight miles per hour, but do not purchase this expecting a massive boost up steep grades.
