Ebike Class and Speed Settings

You can configure the Scrambler to operate in several different modes:

  • Class 1 limits the top speed to 20 mph using pedal assist only
  • Class 2 keeps the 20 mph limit but enables the throttle,
  • Class 3 allows you to pedal up to 28 mph while keeping the throttle capped at 20 mph.
  • California Class 3 mode that disables the throttle entirely for a true pedal-assist-only Class 3 experience.

It even has a Custom mode that allows you to set the top speed as low as 1 mph all the way up to the max 28 mph. For parents buying this for a teen, one of the most practical safety additions is the speed lock. This allows you to secure your chosen top speed behind a PIN so it cannot be altered on the fly.

Throttle Speed and Acceleration

The motor provides strong off-the-line acceleration. Relying solely on the throttle quickly brings the Scrambler to a steady 20 mph. You can choose between having maximum throttle power across all assist levels or limiting the current available in each. This is a welcome feature to see on any ebike using a thumb throttle, which can be harder to modulate than twist grip throttles.

Pedal Assist Levels

Cadence sensors only detect pedaling motion rather than rider effort. As long as you are spinning your legs, you will receive consistent motor support like an on/off switch. The Scrambler utilizes a current-based pedal assist system. This limits each level of assist to a different amount of power rather than a specific speed. Pedal assist level 1 delivers roughly 400W and we were able to creep it up to 20 mph on flat ground during our testing. Levels 2 and 3 gradually ramp things up until you unleash the full power in level 4 which easily hits the top 28 mph. The single-speed drivetrain provides a connected feel up to about 17 or 18 mph, then your pedaling cadence becomes very fast. Eventually, this leads to ghost pedaling as the motor takes over.

Hill Climb Performance

Our test hill has an average 9.6% grade over a quarter mile. This is where the 90 Nm of torque becomes highly noticeable. On throttle alone, the hardtail powered up with impressive capability, maintaining a minimum speed of 14 mph as the display read a steady 1,700 watts of output. The motor remains ridiculously quiet when pushed hard on sustained climbs. While pedaling, the overall experience is very similar. In pedal assist level 1, it is actually quite difficult to keep the pedals spinning against the steep grade. Bumping up to level 2 provides immediate relief. Clicking up through the higher levels unleashes the full peak power making the climb effortless.

Brake Testing

Bringing an 83 lb ebike to a safe stop requires a reliable system. During our brake testing, the Talon P4 four-piston hydraulic disc brakes paired with 180mm rotors provided plenty of stopping power. We were able to lock up the rear tire and cause it to fishtail slightly when applying heavy pressure, proving this setup prioritizes the intense stopping power needed for a heavier moped-style model.
