Built for Comfort and Style

The Model R is a cruiser at heart. Its pedal-forward design and sweptback handlebars provide a comfortable upright position, while the low standover height and adjustable stem enhance accessibility for a wide range of riders. Prefer something other than cruiser-style handlebars? Options like BMX, high-rise chopper, or mountain bike styles are available. The EBC Jumbo seat is a worthwhile upgrade for added comfort, and we always recommend considering a suspension seatpost for an even smoother ride.

With over 1 million possible configurations, thanks to the color customizability of the frame, fork, chainguard, fenders, racks, basket, and its mesh liner, you can design a bike that truly reflects your style.

The Model R starts at just $1,499, with optional upgrades that can increase the price. Be sure to factor in shipping, which is typically around $200 depending on your location. The upside is that your bike is shipped via specialized freight, ensuring it arrives in perfect condition—unlike most other brands that rely on standard FedEx or UPS.

Robust Performance

Equipped with EBC’s 750W rear hub motor, the Model R delivers reliable and smooth acceleration. Backed by an unprecedented 10-year warranty (motor and frame), it highlights EBC’s confidence in its durability. The motor pairs with an included 48V 12Ah battery for up to 40 miles of range.

There are four battery options, the maximum 30Ah upgrade combines a 14Ah frame-mounted battery with a dual battery mounted in EBC’s front basket, offering up to 150 miles of range. Most riders though will find the 12Ah battery sufficient for short cruises or about 20-30 miles. Riders can choose between a single-speed or 7-speed drivetrain for added versatility.

High-Quality Components

The Model R prioritizes quality at every level. It features high-tensile stainless steel hardware that is rust-resistant and built for long-term durability (especially when ridden by the coast), along with hydraulic disc brakes. If you opt for the suspension fork, it offers 80mm of travel and supports 26″ x 3″ EBC Rhino puncture-resistant tires. Every component—from the frame to the pedals—has been thoughtfully selected to deliver the ultimate beach cruiser experience.

Frame and Design

The Model R’s frame blends functionality with aesthetics. From fork styles to tire choices, riders can design a bike that meets their riding needs. The ability to choose components tailored to specific terrain or aesthetic preferences makes the Model R a versatile option.

For sizing, the Model R accommodates a range of rider heights with wheel size options of 26” for taller riders and 24” for those of average to smaller stature. This design ensures that riders can achieve a comfortable fit.

Another accessible option from Electric Bike Companies is there Model S. It offers similar customization and we picked some flashy options on our Model S featured in this review:

Specs and Components

Electric Bike Company let us go crazy with the upgrades on our Model R. We opted for a suspension fork, the upgraded technology package, larger 3″ tires, and a rear MIK rack for added cargo capacity. The specifications table below highlights the frame upgrades and key features chosen for the Model R featured in this review.

Performance Upgrades

Offering tailored options to enhance your ride, you can upgrade the battery, drivetrain, PAS sensor, and throttle style. Details on these upgrades are available in the table below.

Model R Accessories

These are some of the accessories that we think are most important. The front baskets are super high quality and rugged as they bolt right to the frame, they also makes the bike look better and are color customizable. If you opt for the MIK rack, you’ll likely want to pick up a MIK bag or basket as they are very handy, however the MIK accessories can be pricey. EBC has a selection of fast chargers that let you spend more time riding and less time charging.

It also offers convenient controls for pedal assist levels, lights, and a USB charging port for devices. It also features liability waiver you can have guest riders accept before riding.

Safety Lights: turn signals, a high/low beam headlight, and brake lights equipped with a safety sensor for automatic activation in low-light conditions. Different lighting configurations are offered depending on upgrades like racks and baskets.

Horn and Alarm: The electric horn is very loud and is paired with an anti-theft alarm system that operates similarly to a car alarm. It comes with two remotes to activate the alarm that include a panic button.

Upgraded Brakes: 4-piston Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and rust-resistant high tensile strength stainless steel hardware.

Tool kit: Includes cable cutters, a hand pump, a CO2 canister, tire sealant, puncture patches, and specialized tools for working on your EBC for on-the-go maintenance.

EBC offers a wide range of functional accessories for the Model R, allowing you to customize the color of racks, baskets, and even helmets to match your style. MIK-compatible accessories are especially convenient for quick and secure attachment. You can also find a selection of compatible accessories at shop.ebikeescape.com.

Performance Tests

Throttle-Only Test

The Model R’s throttle-only mode provides responsive power tied directly to the pedal assist (PAS) level. PAS Level 1 delivers a steady 9 mph for relaxed cruising, while PAS Level 2 increases speed to 13 mph for efficient riding. PAS Levels 3 to 5 provides smooth acceleration up to 20 mph.

Pedal Assist Levels

The pedal assist system offers five levels, each tailored for different riding styles. Top speed is tailored to the pedal assist level you are in. Level 1 provides up to 9mph, level 2 up to 13mph and levels 3 to 5 provide full motor power. We opted for the single speed drivetrain and it was geared well to suit class 2 or class 3 speeds up to 28 mph. Upgrading to the 7-speed drivetrain will add extra versatility for those living in hilly areas.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Exceptional customization options
  • High-quality components
  • Comfortable riding position
  • Powerful motor with 10 year warranty
  • Built in the USA with premium materials

Cons:

  • Higher starting price, reflecting the premium for U.S. assembly
  • Additional costs for shipping
  • Requires activation of pedal assist after each power-on
  • Speed-based pedal assist can feel limiting to some riders, making the torque sensor a desirable upgrade.

Electric Bike Company Model R vs. Blix Sol X: Customization vs. Simplicity

The Blix Sol X is another cruiser ebike that emphasizes comfort, ease of use, and modern tech features. Priced at $1,799, it offers fewer customization options but delivers a comfortable ride with solid performance. Its 750W motor, paired with torque sensors, provides smooth and reliable support. Standout features include electronic shifting—uncommon at this price point—along with safety enhancements like a hi/lo beam headlight, turn signals, and an effective horn. Paddle shifters ensure precise gear changes, and the included MIK rear rack adds versatility for commuting or errands.
