The electric bike industry has been a hotbed of innovation and growth over the past decade. Yet, not all brands have managed to keep pace with the rapidly evolving market. In this article, we’ll delve into the stories of e-bike brands like Juiced Bikes, VanMoof, Fuell, Zugo, and Dost Bikes that have faced bankruptcy or closed their doors. We’ll also provide valuable resources for current owners navigating these changes.
Be sure to check out our linked resources at the end of each brand to help you maintain and support your ebikes from these brands.
1. Juiced Bikes: High Power Meets Hard Times
Background: Founded by Olympic high jumper Tora Harris back in 2009, Juiced Bikes quickly gained a reputation for producing powerful ebikes like the HyperScorpion and RipCurrent S. These models appealed to riders seeking speed, performance, and long-range capabilities. They were one of the first brands to introduce 52V batteries to a broad audience.
Challenges and Closure: Despite a strong start and being an early player, Juiced Bikes couldn’t hold on following the 2020 and beyond ebike boom. Customer service issues were frequently highlighted in various forums though their bikes were still loved as evidenced by those looking for help to keep their Juiced ebike going. Juiced Bikes has since gone out of business, put up for auction and sold to an unknown buyer for $1.2 million leaving many riders wondering about the future of their ebikes. This is the biggest ebike bankruptcy to date in the US market especially considering how long ago the brand started.
Advice for Owners: While the company’s closure is unfortunate, there’s still some good news. Brands are starting to sell leftover Juiced models and others are stepping in to offer replacement parts which we outline below.

2. VanMoof: The Rise and Fall of a Dutch Pioneer
Background: Established in 2009 by brothers Taco and Ties Carlier in Amsterdam, VanMoof set out to revolutionize urban commuting with their sleek, technology-driven electric bikes.
Success Story: VanMoof became famous for its minimalist design and integrated tech features, such as anti-theft systems and smartphone connectivity. The brand attracted a global following and expanded rapidly, opening stores in major cities around the world. However, they were more well known in Europe.
Bankruptcy: Despite its popularity, VanMoof faced financial difficulties due to overexpansion, production delays, and high operational costs. In 2023, the company declared bankruptcy, leaving customers concerned about software updates, repairs, and the availability of proprietary parts.
Impact on Owners: VanMoof’s bikes rely heavily on proprietary technology, making independent repairs challenging. Owners may face difficulties with maintenance. For owners in Europe there is still hope thanks to new owners though little is known whether the company will expand efforts back to the US. We’ve been able to mention VanMoof’s Instagram account and receive replies.
3. Fuell: Ambitions Cut Short
Background: Co-founded by motorcycle engineering legend Erik Buell, Fuell aimed to blend motorcycle performance with ebike convenience. Their flagship model, the Flluid, boasted an interesting gearbox and motor all in one. It sounded like a spaceship taking off while riding.
Our Review: We took an in-depth look at the Fuell Flluid on our YouTube channel. Check out our review here to see what made this ebike stand out in a crowded market.
Bankruptcy: Despite initial excitement, we think the brand struggled to fit into the market with their higher end priced ebikes and unique motors.
What This Means for Owners: With the company no longer operational, warranty services and official support are unknown. We will update this with any information we receive.
4. Zugo: A Brand’s Unexpected Turn
Background: Zugo Bike made its mark with the Rhino, a versatile fat-tire e-bike designed for both urban commuting and off-road adventures.
Ownership Changes: Zugo went out of business early 2023 but has since been acquired by new owners. While information is limited, the brand appears to be back in business though we can’t comment on their customer service or support.
Our Review: We reviewed their ebike right around the time they started having financial troubles. For those interested you can see our review here.
5. Dost Bikes: A Canadian Tale
Background: Founded by Sam Atakhanov, who previously worked with other ebike brands, Dost Bikes operated out of British Columbia. The company focused on producing well priced but well spec’d ebikes. They kept the lineup simple and owners from our perspective were happy with the brand.
Closure: Dost Bikes has unfortunately gone out of business and Sam now works as a eMobility freelancer. We have no further information as to what led to their demise.
Support for Owners: With Dost Bikes no longer operational, sourcing proprietary parts may be difficult.
Understanding the E-Bike Industry’s Challenges
The rapid growth of the ebike industry has presented several challenges:
- Overcrowded Market: A surge of new brands has intensified competition, making it difficult for companies to maintain market share.
- Supply Chain Disruptions: Global events have caused delays in manufacturing and increased costs for components.
- Financial Strain: The high costs associated with innovation, production, and marketing can be unsustainable without consistent revenue.
- Customer Expectations: Modern consumers demand high-quality products and exceptional customer service, which can be challenging to deliver consistently.
- Tariffs: A recent tariff exception has expired which has also made it harder for brands. All at a time when demand has softened.
Conclusion
The stories of Juiced Bikes, VanMoof, Fuell, Zugo, and Dost Bikes underscore just how dynamic and unpredictable the ebike industry can be. While we aim to feature brands on the channel that show promise for longevity, it’s a challenge to truly know what happens behind the scenes. Our commitment is to keep bringing you insights into reliable brands, but as always, the ebike landscape can shift in unexpected ways.
