Accessibility is a major priority for this lineup. Rather than offering a traditional high-step model, Velotric opted exclusively for an accessible step-through frame design available in two different sizes. The large frame provided plenty of leg extension for our 6-foot reviewer with a 32-inch inseam and was just as comfortable and easy to mount for a 5’5″ rider. Throttle and PAS Acceleration


Having a throttle on a mid-drive ebike is a massive benefit, but it comes with a slight learning curve. Because the motor physically drives the chain, you must be in a lower gear when you press the throttle from a dead stop. Attempting to throttle in a high gear will result in a jerky start and put unnecessary wear on the drivetrain. By utilizing the Velotric app to dial the throttle response down to the slow setting, the takeoff becomes much more manageable for newer riders. Once you get moving and shift up, the left-hand thumb throttle provides excellent power to quickly propel you to 20 mph. We also tested the cruise control feature; while it functions properly, the sensation of holding a steady speed while managing gears feels a bit unusual on a mid-drive and is likely better suited for the hub-driven Discover 3.
Accelerating to the Class 3 top speed of 28 mph is an effortless experience with either sensor engaged. When using the cadence sensor in Boost mode, shifting through the higher gears quickly brings you to 28 mph as long as the pedals are turning. Switching to the torque sensor offers a much more natural feel, allowing you to easily hit 28 mph with only a moderate amount of physical effort from your legs.
Exploring Pedal Assist (Cadence and Torque Sensor)
Having the ability to switch between the cadence and torque sensors completely changes how the Discover M rides on flat ground. When testing the cadence sensor in Class 2 mode, we noted distinct speed cutoffs for each pedal assist level:
- Eco Mode: 11 to 12 mph
- Trail Mode: 16 mph cutoff
- Sport Mode: 18 mph (requires a decently fast pedaling cadence to engage)
- Boost Mode: 20 mph
Swapping over to the torque sensor provided a much more dynamic experience that responds directly to your physical effort and gearing. With minimal effort in Eco mode using fourth or fifth gear, it was easy to cruise at 13 to 14 mph. By shifting into Trail or Sport, we could effortlessly maintain 20 mph or push slightly harder to reach the low 20s. The smart display even offers helpful riding tips, occasionally popping up a “Low pedaling efficiency, shift to fifth gear” warning to remind newer riders how to optimize the mid-drive system. Ultimately, the torque sensor proved to be so powerful right out of the box that we highly recommend turning the lowest assist levels down in the app for a more relaxed city cruising experience.
Auto Mode Performance
For riders who want to eliminate the guesswork of switching between assist levels, Auto Mode offers a highly adaptive experience. The motor continuously adjusts its output based on your pedaling effort and the terrain. During our flat terrain testing, supplying minimal effort in fifth gear allowed the bike to hold a leisurely 11 mph. Putting in moderate effort in sixth gear brought us up to a comfortable 15 mph cruise. When we unlocked the bike to Class 3 limits, pushing hard allowed us to hit 28 mph just as easily as we did in the standard assist levels. Auto Mode is fantastic for general cruising, though riders who prefer to know exactly when their motor will cut off may stick to the standard, customizable PAS levels.
Hill Climb Performance

To test the raw power of the VeloCore motor, we tackled our steep hill climb test on throttle alone. The mid-drive absolutely crushed the incline, holding a highly impressive minimum speed of 12 mph in second gear.
When we rode back down and tested the pedaling performance, the torque sensor provided so much assistance that we never even felt the need to swap over to the cadence sensor. Even in Eco mode, we were able to cruise up the steep grade at 5 mph with barely any effort. Shifting into Sport easily brought us up to 10 mph, and utilizing Boost mode provided such a massive surge of power that the front tire nearly lifted off the ground.
Off-Road Capability and Ride Comfort

While this is a commuter ebike and certainly not meant for mountain bike trails, it handles light off-road excursions surprisingly well. The 27.5 x 2.4-inch Kenda mixed-terrain tires provide better traction on crushed gravel than standard street slicks. During our testing on bumpy stretches of road, the 80mm air suspension fork proved its worth, soaking up small bumps significantly better than a standard coil fork. Pairing that capable front suspension with the included suspension seatpost and memory foam saddle results in a highly cushioned ride that keeps you comfortable across varied terrain.
Velotric Discover M vs. Aventon Level 4 ADV
If you are shopping in the premium mid-drive commuter space, the Aventon Level 4 ADV stands out as a direct competitor. For an additional $300, the Level 4 ADV replaces the standard trigger shifter with an advanced automatic shifting system and pairs a 48T chainring with a tight 10-speed 11-39T cassette. Aventon also heavily invests in security, offering GPS tracking and geofencing (which requires a $20 annual subscription after the first year) alongside a rear wheel electronic lock and keyless battery. Finding the perfect physical fit is also slightly easier with the Level 4 ADV, as it offers three sizes across both step-through and step-over frames.
However, when it comes to utility and out-of-the-box readiness, the Discover M pulls ahead. It boasts a massive 440 lb payload capacity, significantly outperforming the 300 lb limit of the Level 4 ADV. Additionally, the Discover M includes a thumb throttle right out of the box, a feature that is only an optional upgrade on the Level 4 ADV. The Discover M also utilizes a 9-speed 11-46T setup, providing a wider gear range tailored for tackling steeper inclines.
When it comes to long-term ownership, both are leading omnichannel brands, but Aventon currently boasts a slightly larger physical footprint with over 1,800 local shops for in-person support compared to Velotric’s 1,200 locations. Riders who value automatic shifting, high-tech security, and highly specific frame sizing will find the Level 4 ADV well worth the extra investment. Meanwhile, the Discover M remains a highly compelling alternative for those seeking a heavier payload capacity, an included thumb throttle, a wider gear range for climbing, and comparable mid-drive power while keeping an extra $300 in their pocket.
