Euphree Cosmic Jay Review: A Comfort Brand’s First Utility Ebike

Comfort cruisers are what Euphree has built its name on. Swept-back handlebars, a saddle you can sit on all day, a step-thru frame anyone can get a leg over, and the SR Suntour suspension seatpost that shows up on every model. Priced at $2,199, the Cosmic Jay is the first utility ebike the brand has put out, and it is a departure from the norm in this category. Most utility ebikes stay close to a street-oriented feel. This one leans more rugged with 20 x 4-inch moped style tires, and it carries over the comfort hardware Euphree riders already count on.

In this review, we break down the standout features, walk through how the frame and fit work across rider heights, and lay out the full specifications. Standout Features

A 750W Motor and Two Sensor Options

A 750W Bafang geared hub motor drives the rear wheel, and you get to choose how it reads you. A torque sensor measures how hard you push into the pedals and gives back more assist as you work harder. A cadence sensor only measures whether you are pedaling at all, then delivers a set amount of power based on the assist level you are in. Riders coming off a traditional bike usually prefer the responsive feel of a torque sensor, while the cadence sensor is a great way to ensure consistent power. Switching between the two happens in the display menu rather than on the fly, so treat it as a setup choice rather than something you flip mid-ride.

Moped-Style Tires and a Suspension Fork

The CST Scout tires attach with a thru-axle and are visibly tougher than what usually comes on an ebike. What they change most is character. Where the rest of the category rolls on street tread, these give the bike a rugged look and a little more cushion, especially if you air them down. Backing them up is an RST Guide fork with 100mm of travel, preload adjustment on the left leg, and a lockout on the right, which is more travel than most utility ebikes bother with. Together they point the bike at gravel paths and rougher pavement, and the kind of detours a street-tread utility ebike would steer you away from.

The Comfort Package Euphree Is Known For

An SR Suntour NCX suspension seatpost shows up on every Euphree we have tested, and it is one of our favorite comfort upgrades because it makes rough pavement feel like you are riding on a cloud. Preload at the base lets you dial it in to your weight. A Velo Plush saddle sits on top of it, and the post drops low enough that shorter riders do not have to give up the suspension to get a good fit, which is not always true of bikes that offer one. Euphree branded lock-on ergonomic grips cover the third contact point, and the lock-on collars mean they will not twist under your hands. Carrying that much comfort hardware onto a utility bike is unusual, and it is the biggest reason this one rides differently than the rest of the category.

Power Customization at Every Assist Level

Four assist levels sit above off: eco, tour, sport, and turbo. What makes the system worth digging into is that every level can be tuned for both timing and power delivery, so eco can be softened to a light nudge and turbo can be set to pull as hard as the motor allows. Ebike class is set here too, with class one, two, and three options plus an unlimited setting for private property where regulations allow it. Throttle behavior gets its own menu: switch it off entirely, tie it to eco for a soft takeoff, or tie it to turbo for everything the motor has. A USB-C port underneath the display handles phone charging on the go.

Battery, Range, and Charging

Mounted beneath the frame, the pack comes out in two stages, a key turn to unlock it and a second lever to fully release it. You can charge it on or off the frame, and a button on the pack shows state of charge. Euphree quotes up to 65 miles, which is the kind of number you only see with a light rider in the lowest assist level on flat ground in ideal conditions, so plan on closer to 30-40 miles for your average rider and more demanding rides. The included charger is a 2 amp unit, so a full charge from empty takes roughly seven and a half hours. The battery is certified to UL 2271 and the electronics are certified to UL 2849.

A MIK HD Rack and a Growing Accessory Lineup

Rear storage runs on MIK HD, a higher weight capacity version of the MIK standard, so accessories lock on with the bike key and lift straight off with no straps involved. Euphree sells a basket and liner for it, includes a rear bag with the bike, and offers pannier hangers if you prefer bags on the side. Because this is the MIK standard, you are not limited to what Euphree makes, and our own MIK bags and baskets fit it. Pull the front head badge off and you will find mounting points for the front rack Euphree developed for this model. That accessory ecosystem is still filling out, with more pieces expected in fall 2026.

203mm Rotors Front and Rear

Braking hardware is a step above what this category usually gets. Two piston Tektro hydraulic disc brakes run 203mm rotors at both ends, where most ebikes at this price use 180mm up front or mix sizes between the two. The levers include motor cutoffs, so assist drops the moment you reach for them.

Commuter-Ready Lighting and Fenders

Both lights run off the main battery, so there is nothing extra to charge or clip on before a night ride. Up front you can run the side running lights on their own or switch the center beam on as well. Out back is a running light that brightens when you pull the brakes, which is something plenty of more expensive ebikes still skip. Metal fenders cover both wheels and a bell comes standard, so wet roads and shared paths are handled without a trip to the accessory aisle.

A Custom 10T Top Gear

Gearing is where Euphree did something worth calling out. Instead of the 11-32T freewheel that is standard at this price, they specified a 10-32T. That one tooth means your legs spin slower at any given speed in top gear, so on a bike that reaches 28 mph you can keep putting power down instead of spinning out. Paired with a 50T double-sided chainring, it is a wider range than we see on just about any ebike we test. A Shimano Altus derailleur and an 8-speed trigger shifter handle the shifting, and a chainstay protector keeps the chain off the frame.


Frame, Fit, and Colors

Getting on and off is easy here. The step-thru frame drops low, the welds along the down tube are smoothed out, and two bottle cage mounts sit on that down tube, which is worth knowing if you carry a full size bottle. High-rise BMX style handlebars do a lot of the work on fit, pulling you upright with your hands set wide, and the cables run into the stem for cleaner routing. The crossbar leaves room for accessories, including the cell phone mount in our shop. Plastic platform pedals and a rear-mounted kickstand round out the everyday hardware, and that kickstand is burly enough to hold the bike steady once it is loaded. Color options are Royal Blue and Army Green.

Fit deserves some honesty. A 20-inch wheel platform with an 18-inch standover naturally favors shorter riders, and Euphree lists a range of five feet to six feet. At six feet tall with a 32-inch inseam, we could not quite reach full leg extension even with the seatpost at its highest point, though the bike was still a good time to ride and workable for someone that size. Riders at the top of that range who want proper extension would be better served by the Stellar Falcon or the City Robin. It is also a heavy ebike, and that does not change with your size, so factor in stairs, car racks, and anywhere you need to lift it.

Performance and Ride Quality

Our test unit was an early production bike. We rode it in class 3 with both sensor types, and we adjusted the assist levels in the settings first so we could see how far the customization actually goes: eco turned down, turbo turned up, tour and sport left in the middle.

Throttle-Only Test

From a standing start on flat ground, throttle alone pulled us to 20 mph, passing 13, 16, and 18 mph on the way. What stood out is the modulation. Barely pressing the throttle held us around 12 to 13 mph, and it does not take much travel to reach full power. Because throttle output is tied to whichever level you assign it, a rider who wants a softer launch can set it to eco, and a rider who wants everything can leave it on turbo.

Torque Sensor on Flat Ground

Starting from a stop in eco, the motor responded instantly but stayed light, holding around 8 mph while we spun easy. Pushing harder brought a bit more speed without much more help from the motor, which is the whole point of turning a level down. Tour cruised at 11 mph with light effort and 13 mph with more, reaching 17 mph when we really leaned on the pedals. Sport was a clear jump, holding 16 mph while we spun easily and reaching 20 mph in sixth gear with more leg. After setting sport to fast timing and 65 percent power assist, the same easy spinning produced 18 mph, and 21 to 22 mph became comfortable. Turbo in eighth gear took us to 28 mph while spinning easily, and thanks to the 10T top gear we could keep pedaling at that speed instead of spinning out. Turbo behaves more like a cadence sensor than a torque sensor, with less modulation, and we are fine with that, because most riders reaching for the top level want maximum power.

Cadence Sensor on Flat Ground

Eco with the cadence sensor settled at 8 to 9 mph, which is a meaningful improvement over other recent Euphree models where eco handed out far too much power for a rider still getting comfortable. Tour in fourth gear brought 12 to 13 mph, sport moved us to 17 mph and up into sixth gear, and turbo predictably launched us to 28 mph. The levels are spaced well, and an accessible eco matters most here, because cadence is the mode newer riders are most likely to choose.

Hill Climb Test

On throttle alone, speed settled at a minimum of 10 mph and the bike made it to the top without stalling, which is plenty for a 78 lb ebike, though it is not the strongest climb we have recorded. Pedaling up, eco in first gear with the torque sensor crept along at 4 mph and wanted more power. Tour improved on that but still asked a lot of the legs, sport eased things up, and turbo in third gear was the one that made the hill easy. Turbo handing out power freely, the way a cadence sensor would, is exactly what you want on a climb, so you can stay on the torque sensor and simply reserve turbo for hills.


Euphree Cosmic Jay vs. Aventon Abound SR

Priced $300 less at $1,899, the Aventon Abound SR comes at this category from a completely different direction. Its headline feature is the ACU, Aventon’s connected control unit, which puts 4G LTE and Bluetooth on the bike itself. That means live GPS tracking, geofencing, alarms that notify you the moment the bike moves without you, and the ability to lock the kickstand from your phone, all through the Aventon app on a data plan that runs $20 a year with the first year included. The same app handles ride tuning, so every assist level is adjustable. Hauling is the other half of the story. The rear rack carries 140 lbs inside a 440 lb total payload, a front rack is available, and the passenger accessory lineup runs from child seats to a captain’s chair. Behind all of it sits a dealer network of more than 1,800 locations, so you can test ride one first and have somewhere local to bring it.

Three differences are worth weighing. The Abound SR ships as a class 2 at 20 mph and needs the app to unlock a max 25 mph while pedaling. The Abound SR rack carries far more weight, but it is not MIK, so you mount accessories rather than clicking on and off with a key. And there is no answer to the ACU on the Cosmic Jay, which has no tracking, no alarm, and no app at all. If theft protection, carrying a passenger, tuning from your phone, or having a shop on your side of town are what you are after, and you need a bike that fits riders at both ends of the height range, the Abound SR is the better buy. If you want the higher top speed, stronger braking, and a bike that is happy off smooth pavement, the Cosmic Jay is the one.

Rear Rack Capacity: 60 lbs is modest for a bike wearing a utility badge, and we would like to see that number go up.
Accessory Ecosystem Is Still Catching Up: The front rack and the rest of the rack accessories are not all available yet, with more expected in fall 2026.
Fit Leans Shorter: At six feet tall we could not get full leg extension.

Most utility ebikes stay close to a street-oriented feel. This one leans rugged, and the custom gearing, oversized rotors, comfort features, and moped-style tires give you more to work with than the spec sheet alone suggests.
