The Aventon Abound LR (“long rack”) is Aventon’s latest cargo ebike priced at $1,999, and yes, the longer rack is an improvement over the standard Abound’s. You now have room to fit two child seats comfortably and is MIK compatible, which basically translates to even more cargo possibilities. That’s awesome, but what makes the Abound LR genuinely different are the features you might not see at first glance.
Aventon’s new Control Unit (ACU) adds 4G connectivity and smart security. Plus, the app features “Ride Tune”, giving you the power to tweak each pedal assist level. And let’s not forget the super-cool e-locking kickstand, which seriously bumps up the Abound LR’s security game. Our review is going to break down all these features and everything else you need to know to see if the Abound LR is a contender in its class.

Key Features of the Aventon Abound LR
Cargo Capability and Weight
On the front, you have a 4-point mounting system for a basket or rack. That isn’t new, but Aventon’s “Pizza ” front rack is. It’s a flat platform to mount accessories and has two spots for bottle cages. The 29-inch rear rack is well-thought-out, adding five extra inches of cargo space over the original Abound’s. Two well-spaced MIK (“Mounting Is Key”) accessory windows allow quick swapping of seats, baskets, and bags. They also have a traditional 4-bolt mounting pattern around each window for cushions, chairs, and universal cargo accessories. Rounding out the rack are the pannier hangers for easy mounting of side bags.
The total weight capacity of the frame (440 lbs) and rear rack (143 lbs) is the same as Abound and the Abound SR. An increase in carrying capability would have been nice with the larger footprint. It may not be able to carry as much weight as other cargo models around this price, but it is still a great option for families and errands around town. A heavy 88 lbs, it is stable when loading up or riding and, in general, easy to handle.
Safety Lights and Brakes
Knowing you can be seen and stop reliably is nice, especially when you’re riding a fully-loaded cargo ebike. Good news: the Abound LR performs great in this area. The Tektro hydraulic disc brakes use a 180mm front rotor and a larger 203mm rear rotor, giving you dependable stopping power, even when going downhill. Plus, you get Aventon’s integrated lighting – a bright headlight and rear lights that work as running lights, brake lights, and turn signals mounted to the rack.

Tires and Front Suspension
The 20” x 3” Innova tires feature a street-oriented tread for urban use, complemented by reflective sidewalls for added visibility. Full-coverage metal fenders protect both you and cargo from water, while the 50mm-travel front fork, adjustable for preload and lockout, smooths out bumps. A thru-axle reinforces wheel stability under load.
Cockpit and Controls
The updated cockpit includes BMX-style handlebars and a quill stem, adjustable for height and reach—a nice improvement over prior designs. Ergonomic locking grips and Shimano 8-speed trigger shifter offer comfort and precision, while the compact LCD display provides essential ride data, integrated PAS controls, and has a USB-C port for charging devices.
Smart Features
Aventon App and Connectivity
The full potential of the Abound LR is unlocked with the Aventon app. The coolest feature is the ability to fine-tune the torque, assistance, and pedal response of each pedal assist level with “Ride Tune”. You also have access to maps, ride sharing, and gamified challenges, all through a user-friendly interface.
Keep your bike secure with GPS tracking, geofencing (which automatically shuts down the bike and alerts you if it goes outside a set area), and motion alerts. While these security features require a connectivity subscription, the first year is included, and then it’s only $20 per year. That’s less than $2 a month, which is a small price for peace of mind compared to standard data plan costs.
Locking Kickstand
The locking kickstand secures the ebike when activated, a distinctive and practical anti-theft measure uncommon even in higher-priced models. It keeps the bike stable when you load and unload cargo and is easy to disengage. Just brace it with your foot and rock the bike forward.
Battery and Electronics
Equipped with a 20Ah top-loading battery that is removable via the display or app without keys that fully charges from empty in 5 hours using the 4A charger. Even if you run your battery all the way down, enough juice will be saved for you to remove the battery. There is a manual backup option and can charge the battery while in the frame.
Aventon estimates a 60-mile range if you are in pedal assist level 1 on flat terrain and weigh 160 lbs. The electronics are IPX4 water-resistant, making the LR suitable for riding on wet roads or in light rain and UL 2849 certified and the battery is UL 2271 certified, making it a safe option. We love top-loaded batteries, they are very easy to remove and install. A nice final touch is that the battery’s cover features a spot for a bottle cage.
Frame and Rider Compatibility
No doubt, the Abound LR has a premium look with a gravity-cast frame, smooth welds, and a top-tier paint job. The low standover height of the step-through frame is very accessible and the adjustable quill stem and BMX-inspired handlebars offer adjustability for a range of riders, though you’ll need to keep an Allen wrench handy when you want to change things.
Even with cargo, it is very easy to mount and dismount. With an advertised rider height range of 4′ 11″-6′ 3″, JT (5’7” | 29” inseam) fit comfortably and was able to get full extension. On the other hand, Ryan (6’0” | 32” inseam) will be seeking a longer aftermarket seat post. The included Zoom suspension seatpost is a nice comfort bonus, but its limited height adjustment is not long enough for tall riders. The Abound LR is best suited for small to medium-sized riders out of the box and is available in sage or stealth (matte black) finishes.

Fully Loaded Performance Tests: Aventon Abound LR Review
The best way to truly test a cargo ebike is to load it up with cargo, so we put Ryan (140 lbs) in the captain’s chair, maxing out the rear rack’s capacity. With a total rider weight of about 370 lbs, we were near the top range of the Abound LR’s max payload. Read on to see how the torque sensor and the 750W motor’s 80Nm of torque measured up to the weight.
*Note: You will notice a big jump in support when testing the top PAS level. We used Ride Tune through the app to max out assistance in Turbo and kept the default settings for the other modes.
Throttle-Only Acceleration Test
On flat ground from a standstill, the throttle eased into the acceleration. It comfortably made it to 18 mph and we made it briefly to the max 20 mph (per Class 2 regulation) before running out of road. Even with the weight, you can expect controlled power delivery and stable riding at higher speeds.
Pedaling in Different Assist Modes
The torque sensor dynamically adjusts power in response to your pedaling input. Even when heavily loaded, the motor was responsive and the added weight became surprisingly easy to manage while riding. Here are our findings:
With light pedaling effort, we observed the following approximate speeds: 7-9 mph in Eco, 10 mph in Sport, and 15 mph in Turbo. With moderate pedaling effort, these speeds increased to around 16 mph in Eco, a more easily sustained 15-16 mph in Sport and, with some serious leg engagement, 23-24 mph in Turbo before Ryan started getting nervous in the Captain’s Chair. Unloaded, we confirmed the Abound LR reached its advertised maximum speed of 25 mph.
Hill Climb Test
For our fully loaded hill climb test, we devised a worst-case scenario: climbing a steep parking garage ramp with speed bumps without a rolling start using throttle-only (no pedaling). Letting the LR do all the work, it held between 3-5mph; while not a fast climb, it was actually not a bad showing for a 36V system.
Shifting to the lowest gear in Turbo allowed a steady 5 mph with light pedal effort for the rest of the ascent. Since torque sensors increase power in parallel with your effort, steep hills can be tricky to achieve full motor support. You can pedal while using throttle to get the full torque of the motor, mimicking the cadence sensor experience. The Abound LR can work its way up steep hills with a full load, just don’t expect rapid throttle-only hill climbs. JT was thankful for the suspension fork and seatpost on the speed bumps. Ryan wasn’t so lucky but didn’t complain.
Comparison: Aventon Abound LR vs The Abound SR
The Aventon Abound SR (“Short Rack”) is what we consider more of a utility ebike. It is better suited for smaller loads and single passenger use. The rear rack has a single MIK window and a 4-bolt mounting pattern. Both models share identical motor, battery, carrying capacity and smart features, making cargo requirements the deciding factor. Final Thoughts On The Aventon Abound LR
The Abound LR elevates the affordable cargo ebike field with its advanced security features, ride customization, and a long rack that adapts to various cargo applications. While the seat post length and rear rack capacity could be improved, these are relatively minor limitations. We think the Abound is best suited for moderate hauling, casual errands, or as a family-friendly adventure wagon.
