Throttle-Only Acceleration Test (0-20+ mph)
So, what happens when you let the motor do all the work? We pinned the thumb throttle, and the Solar Sparrow took off smoothly, hitting 20 mph without hesitation. In its unlocked setting, it kept pulling to a surprising top speed of 27 mph. We also appreciate that you can tune the throttle’s aggressiveness in the display, setting it to “Eco” for a much milder, gentler start.
Pedal Assist Level Exploration
We explored the four pedal assist levels (Eco, Tour, Sport, and Turbo) to get a feel for each one. It’s worth noting the nature of the single-speed drivetrain makes the Solar Sparrow ideal for cruising at Class 2 speeds (20 mph max with throttle), but it is Class 3 capable for speeds up to 28 mph with pedal assist.
- Eco: Your go-to for a gentle, battery-sipping cruise. It provides a noticeable but mellow boost up to about 14 mph.

Pedal Assisted Acceleration Test (0-28mph)
When you start pedaling, the bike responds eagerly, especially in the higher assist levels. The torque sensor provides an incredibly intuitive experience, where the bike’s power mirrors your own. With the single-speed gearing, you’ll find that once you get past 22 mph, your legs will be spinning pretty fast (known as “ghost pedaling”) and the motor will be doing most of the work.

We pointed the Solar Sparrow at our designated test hill and relied only on the throttle. It performed impressively, maintaining a minimum speed of 14 mph all the way up. This shows the 500W motor has plenty of torque to handle moderate hills without needing to pedal.
Pedal Assisted Hill Climb Test
Of course, a hill climb is a different story when you’re providing some of the power. This test really highlighted the bike’s versatility.
- Torque Sensor: Climbing required a solid effort from the rider in the lower PAS levels. In Turbo, it was certainly manageable but will still give you a good workout.
- Cadence Sensor: If you want to make hills disappear, switch to the cadence sensor. As long as you keep the pedals turning, the motor delivers consistent power, letting you spin up the hill at 12-13 mph with ease.
- Throttle Assist: The ultimate trump card for steep hills is using the throttle and pedals together. It’s a great strategy for a single-speed bike, giving you all the power you need to conquer almost any incline.
