What’s New on the Lectric XP 4? More Power, More Refinement

It’s clear Lectric wasn’t content with just minor tweaks; they’ve given the Lectric XP 4 a host of considerable upgrades, building on the already popular and well-loved XP platform.

Powertrain & Performance

Perhaps the most significant—though widely anticipated—update is the introduction of Lectric’s own in-house designed torque sensor. This replaces the previous cadence sensor, offering a much smoother, more intuitive ride that amplifies rider input rather than just providing power when the pedals spin. It’s Lectric’s fourth iteration of torque sensor tech, designed to make reaching higher speeds easier by reducing the pedal cadence required. Having this level of refinement on a $999 ebike really sets a new benchmark for value in the Lectric XP 4.

Complementing the new sensor are two motor options, each paired with a different capacity battery (both SGS tested to UL 2271 standard):

  • XP4 ($999): 500W nominal motor (1,092W peak) with 55Nm of torque. Paired with a 48V 10.4Ah battery for up to 50 miles of range.
  • XP4 750 ($1,299): 750W nominal motor (1,310W peak) with a hefty 85Nm of torque. Comes with a larger 48V 17.5Ah battery pushing the range up to an estimated 85 miles.

Both motors feature Lectric’s Stealth M24 technology, aiming for a quieter ride despite the increased power. The entire electrical system has been tested by SGS to the UL 2849 standard, and the bike meets the ISO 4210 international safety standard.

Frame & Ergonomics

The frame gets a full redesign for the Lectric XP 4, available in both step-thru and high-step (step-over) configurations. It sports a more modern aesthetic with cleaner lines. Lectric addressed rider fit with a new 0-degree stem, bringing the handlebars slightly closer for a more upright and less stretched-out position compared to the XP 3.0. The seat post is also longer to accommodate taller riders better (4’10”-6’3″). The overall payload capacity remains a solid 330 lbs.

New colors freshen up the look, with some options exclusive to the 750W motor:

  • Step-Over: Tempest Gray, Pine Green (750W only)
  • Step-Thru: Stratus White, Tempest Gray (750W only), Raindrop Blue (750W only)

Display

A brand-new 3.5-inch color TFT display is a major upgrade. It’s removable (packaged separately to prevent damage), features a much more intuitive interface with five ride modes (Eco, Tour, Sport, Sport+, Turbo), eliminates the old ‘P-settings’ in favor of an easy-to-navigate settings menu, and includes a USB-C port for charging devices.

Brakes

Custom Star Union (Lectric 602) two-piston hydraulic disc brakes with thicker 180mm rotors (28% thicker according to Lectric) provide improved stopping power.

Drivetrain

An upgrade to an 8-speed Shimano Altus derailleur and trigger shifter (replacing the previous Tourney) offers more reliable shifting. This is paired with an 11-32T freewheel and a large 56T custom chainring with a dual-sided chainguard to reduce ghost pedaling at speed.

Throttle

Due to the new shifter, the twist throttle is gone, replaced by an underbar thumb throttle on the left side.

Tires

New 20″ x 3″ mixed-terrain tires feature a smoother center tread for efficiency and quietness on pavement, with knobbier edges for grip on looser surfaces.

Lights & Safety

An upgraded 90-lumen headlight that includes amber side lights comes with the 500W version for better visibility. Lectric includes their “elite” headlight with the 750W version. The rear now features a brake-actuated tail light and integrated turn signals, controlled via an updated button pad.

Comfort & Convenience

Ergonomic locking grips, quick-release plastic pedals (easier to use than previous versions), polypropylene fenders, and a relocated keyhole on the side (allowing for keyless riding) are welcome changes. The bike still folds compactly, and the battery remains integrated within the frame but requires partial folding for removal.

Rack

The rear rack maintains its 150 lb capacity but now features the LevelUp Rack. It’s compatible with accessories like the Yepp child seat or Lectric’s Buddy Seat (passenger pack).

Suspension

The front suspension fork offers 50mm of travel with preload adjustment and lockout, now featuring blacked-out stanchions.

The Lectric XP 4 Ride: Smooth Power, Impressive Speed (XP 4 750W Tested)

Note: Our riding impressions are based on testing the Lectric XP 4 750W model . We changed the “Assistance Level” setting configured in the display to provide more torque/power in each pedal assist level.

The difference the torque sensor makes is immediate. Power delivery feels natural and responsive. In Eco mode, it provides a gentle nudge, perfect for relaxed cruising, while Turbo mode unleashes the full potential – and on the 750W version we tested, that potential is noteworthy. The 85Nm of torque is ample, making hills feel considerably easier and acceleration brisk, especially with the higher power output setting enabled.

Hitting the Class 3 top speed of 28 mph (where permitted) is easily achievable on the Lectric XP 4 750, particularly in the higher assist levels (Sport, Sport+, Turbo) or with the throttle. The larger 56T chainring helps maintain comfortable pedaling cadence even at these higher speeds. The throttle provides instant power. Though some may find the new thumb throttle slightly harder to modulate for very low speeds compared to the old twist grip. Thankfully, the display allows customization, letting you tie throttle power output to the selected pedal assist level.

Ride comfort feels similar to the previous generation, but the new stem does make for a slightly less reachy cockpit. The mixed-terrain tires roll quieter and more efficiently on pavement than pure knobbies. On gravel paths or fire roads, the 3-inch width provides confidence, though the basic front suspension can feel overwhelmed and top out audibly on rougher bumps – it’s suitable for light trails but not true mountain biking. The hydraulic brakes offer confident stopping power.

The Verdict on the Lectric XP 4

The Lectric XP 3.0 was a tough act for Lectric to follow, the XP 4 really manages to build upon its success in some meaningful ways. The addition of the torque sensor fundamentally improves the riding experience, making it feel smoother and more intuitive. While we haven’t had the chance to specifically test the standard 500W motor on the XP 4 yet (stay tuned), we anticipate it will provide plenty of range and power for most people. It’s awesome that Lectric now offers an even more powerful, long-range version for those who want that extra capability. Upgrades like the Altus drivetrain, the improved brakes, the integrated turn signals, and the excellent new display add some real tangible value and refinement to the Lectric XP 4.

While there are still some minor points, like the basic suspension and kickstand, the core package, especially when you consider that $999 starting price, offers stronger value than ever. Lectric has listened to feedback and delivered a host of upgrades that make their best-selling folding electric bike even better, all while maintaining the same starting price. We feel like the Lectric XP 4 is poised to continue the XP legacy as a leader in the folding ebike market.
