Yakima OnRamp LX Review: We Loaded 4 Very Different Ebikes On It

Hauling ebikes is where a lot of hitch racks quietly give up. Plenty of them top out around 60 lb per bike, which rules out most of the fat tire market before you even get to the driveway, and the ones that do hold more still expect you to deadlift an 80 lb bike up to tray height. Yakima built the OnRamp LX to solve both problems at once: 80 lb per tray, and a ramp that lives on the rack so you can roll the bike up instead of lifting it.

At $999 for the 2-inch version, this is not an impulse purchase. So the question worth answering is not whether it feels well built, because it does. The question is whether it actually works with the ebikes people own. We loaded four very different bikes onto it: a 20-inch folder with an unusual frame, a fendered city ebike wearing front and rear racks, a fat tire mid-drive, and a full-suspension fat tire bike with one of the longest wheelbases we have ever put on a rack. Two of them went on in about a minute. One took some creative problem solving. Let us talk about how it went.

Price: You Are Paying for the Rating

Yakima lists the OnRamp LX at $999, and that puts it squarely in premium hitch rack territory. Budget ebike racks are still landing around the $500 mark, so you are asking a name brand to justify roughly double. At full retail that is a real conversation. We have seen this rack discounted as low as $759, and at that number the math gets considerably friendlier. Worth checking the links above before you commit, because the price on this one moves.

What you are buying at that price is mostly the weight rating and the ramp. A lot of companies charge extra for a loading ramp, if they offer one at all, and this one is aluminum and stores on the rack itself rather than rattling around in your trunk.

Weight Capacity: Read the Fine Print

Capacity is the first spec to check on any rack you plan to put an ebike on, and the headline number here is strong. The 2-inch version is rated to 80 lb per tray, and that rating holds for RV use, which is rarer than it sounds. Front-mounting a hitch rack on an RV usually costs you capacity. Here it does not.

Off-road is where the number changes, and it changes a lot. Take the rack onto rough surfaces and Yakima drops the rating to 48 lb per bike on the 2-inch model. That is below the weight of most fat tire ebikes with the battery installed, so if your riding involves washboard forest roads to reach the trailhead, plan around it. Going with the 1.25-inch receiver costs you capacity in both directions: 70 lb on-road and 42 lb off-road.

The rack itself weighs 53.5 lb. That is manageable for one person to move around a garage, but it is enough that you will want to think about where it lives when it is off the vehicle.

Will Your Ebike Fit?

Two numbers decide this. Wheelbase has to fall between 34 and 54 inches, and Yakima now rates the trays for tires up to 32 inches, with the practical breakdown being 20 x 4.5, 26 x 5, 27.5 x 4.5, 29 x 3.25, and 32 x 3.25. Fat tires work straight out of the box with no add-on kit, which is not something every rack in this category can claim.

That 54-inch ceiling is generous enough to cover a lot of cargo and long-tail bikes, though we found out it is a genuine ceiling rather than a comfortable margin. More on that when we get to the Velotric.

Features Worth Knowing About

Three-Position Tilt

Pull the pin on the left side, release the keyed bolt on the right, and the rack moves between three positions. Fully upright collapses it flat against the vehicle when you are not carrying anything, and on our test vehicle it did not block the license plate, though that will depend entirely on what you drive. The middle position locks it flat for hauling. The third drops the whole rack down so you can get into a trunk or hatch with bikes still loaded, which is the position you will appreciate at a trailhead parking lot.

Trays That Slide and Telescope

This is the feature that makes the rack work across so many bikes. Each tray telescopes to match the wheelbase using a toolless screw clamp at the base, so dialing in a new bike takes seconds rather than a trip to the toolbox. Underneath, the entire tray can also be shifted left or right on its mounting bolts. That second adjustment is the one people miss, and it is how you keep two mismatched bikes from fighting over the same space, or rebalance the load when a heavy long bike wants to sit off-center.

StadiumSeating

Yakima calls the tiered tray layout StadiumSeating, and the outer bar sits at a visible angle so the two bikes ride at different heights. In practice it does what it claims. Our taller bike cleared the rear rack of the shorter one without any repositioning, and neither bike ever touched the other on the road.

The Ramp

Unscrew two fasteners and the aluminum ramp lifts off its storage position on the rack. It is a two-piece design, so you loosen the second section, extend it, tighten it back down, and slide it into place. Rolling a fat tire ebike up a ramp instead of hoisting it is not a small quality-of-life difference. It is the whole reason to consider this rack over a cheaper one, and the fact that it stows on the rack means you will actually have it with you when you need it.

Security

A HitchLock on Yakima’s Same Key System comes in the box and secures the rack to your receiver. For the bikes themselves, there is an integrated loop where Yakima expects you to run your own chain or cable lock. No bike locks are included, so budget for that separately if you plan to leave the bikes unattended.

How Four Different Ebikes Actually Fit

Spec sheets tell you a rack will work. Loading day tells you how much fiddling it takes. We went from easiest to hardest.

Lectric XP Lite: Easy, With One Catch

Lectric’s lightest ebike rolls 20-inch tires and posed no challenge at all on the weight side. The tray was already set close to the right wheelbase, the front tire dropped into place, and the rear tire seated against the insert that stops the bike from creeping forward or back. Two extra-long wheel straps thread through the spokes, cinch down, and that was the shake test passed.

The catch is the frame. Ideally the clamp lands on a top tube or a seat post, and this frame gives you neither in a convenient spot, so we ended up clamping the stem. It held, and there is padding where the clamp contacts the bike, but if this were a bike we hauled every weekend we would flip it around in the tray and put the clamp on the seat post instead. That is a two-minute change, not a dealbreaker, and it is a good preview of the main thing to understand about this rack.

Euphree City Robin X Plus: Fenders and Racks, No Problem

Here is where the design earns its keep. Because the bike is held by the frame and the wheel straps rather than by an arm clamping down over the front tire, fenders are completely irrelevant. That single design choice removes the most common headache people run into when they try to put a fully equipped city ebike on a hitch rack.

This one needed the tray brought in. Undoing the toolless quick adjustment, sliding the extension, and re-tightening took about as long as it takes to describe. The City Robin carries both a front and a rear rack, and we normally strip those off before traveling. We did not have to here. Paired with the shorter Lectric on the low tray, the StadiumSeating offset gave us clearance over the rear rack with room to spare.

Aventon Adventure Mid-Drive: Ramp Time

Out came the ramp, and the difference is obvious the moment you use it. Rolling a heavy fat tire ebike up into the tray beats lifting one every single time, especially if you are loading alone.

Getting the clamp onto the frame took a bit of thought. With this bike positioned where it needed to be, the strap was long enough to wrap around both the top tube and the down tube, which worked and held solidly. The alternative would have been to loosen the bolts underneath and slide the entire tray to the right, which would have opened up a cleaner clamping point. Either approach works. Which one you pick depends on your bike.

Velotric Nomad 2X: Testing the Ceiling

This is the one that pushed the rack. The Nomad 2X is a long, full-suspension fat tire ebike, and Velotric lists it at 80 lb. That number sits exactly on the rack’s on-road limit, which is close enough that we would put the bike on a scale without the battery before trusting it. Manufacturer weight claims and what the scale says do not always agree, and this is not the spec you want to be optimistic about.

We rolled it up front wheel first, which is the easier direction, and had to steer around the handlebars a little on the way in. Fitting it meant extending the tray to its full length. That is the 54-inch ceiling, used up entirely, and it is a fair marker for the longest ebike this rack will take. The center post would not extend far enough to reach a top tube, so the clamp went onto the seat tube instead and tightened down without complaint. For regular hauling of a bike this long, we would slide the tray left underneath to balance the load better across the rack.

Yakima also throws in a cinch strap that you can wrap over both bikes and anchor back to the rack for extra downward pressure. You can never really have too many straps as long as every one of them is doing something.

Two Things We Do Every Time We Travel

Pull the battery before you drive. It takes real weight off the bike, which matters when you are anywhere near the 80 lb ceiling, and it removes the battery from the part of the vehicle most likely to get hit if someone rear-ends you.

Then give that battery somewhere safe to ride. We carry ours in a waterproof, flame-resistant battery bag from our store. The small roll-top fits nearly every ebike battery on the market and has a handle plus Velcro straps if you want to strap a spare to the bike. There is a zip-top version too, with reflective accents, a bungee on the lid, and pass-throughs so you can charge the battery without taking it out.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • 80 lb per tray. Most racks in this class still stop well short of that, and it is the difference between carrying your fat tire ebike and leaving it home.
  • The ramp is included and stores on the rack. Companies that offer a ramp at all often charge extra for it. This one is aluminum and it is always with you.
  • Trays adjust two ways. Telescoping for wheelbase and sliding side to side for positioning, which is what let us fit four completely different bikes.
  • Fenders and racks stay on. Because nothing clamps over the front wheel, a fully equipped commuter loads without stripping accessories off first.
  • Full capacity on an RV. The 2-inch model keeps its 80 lb rating for RV use rather than taking the usual penalty.
  • Assembly is quick. It arrives mostly built and does not come in a pile of parts.

Cons

  • $999 is a lot of rack. Budget ebike racks still sit near $500. On sale the gap narrows enough that the extra capacity and the ramp justify themselves, but at full price you should want those features specifically.
  • Plenty of plastic. The clamps and adjusters feel solid and are made of hard plastic rather than something flimsy, but plastic left in the sun and weather for years is plastic. Do not overtighten anything.
  • The center post takes planning. This is the honest headline. Every bike we loaded worked, but two of the four needed us to think about where the clamp would land, and one needed the strap wrapped around two tubes. Expect to spend time on setup the first weekend.
  • Off-road capacity drops hard. Going from 80 lb to 48 lb rules out most fat tire ebikes on rough roads.
  • No bike lock included. The lock loop is there, but the chain or cable is on you.

Final Thoughts

Judge this rack on the problem it set out to solve and it does very well. Carrying two genuinely heavy ebikes without lifting either one is the whole pitch, and after loading a 20-inch folder, a fendered commuter, a fat tire mid-drive, and a long full-suspension fat tire bike, we did not find one it could not take.

What you should go in expecting is a setup session. The center post design that makes fenders irrelevant is the same design that occasionally makes you hunt for a clamping point, and there is real adjustment work on the first outing. Once your two bikes are dialed in, that work is done and you stop thinking about it. That is why this rack suits someone hauling the same pair of ebikes most of the time, and suits someone constantly swapping between six different bikes considerably less.

If the ebikes you own are under 60 lb and you never plan to go heavier, there is money to be saved elsewhere. If you own something in the 70 to 80 lb range, or a long-wheelbase cargo bike that most racks will not touch, the OnRamp LX is one of the few options that will carry it and one of the very few that will let you roll it on.
